Curriculum Philosophy

At the heart of every outstanding school is a strong academic curriculum. A vital part of a student’s educational experience at SJN is being challenged to think, question, evaluate, discover, and learn analytical and research skills. The core curriculum of Math, Religion, English, Science, Social Studies, and Reading is rounded out with Music, Art, Library, Physical Education, and Computer classes for all grade levels.

The well-rounded curriculum at SJN challenges the mind, encourages physical well-being, and nurtures the spirit of each student, preparing a solid foundation upon which they will continue to build their lives after they leave St. John Neumann.

Testing

Iowa Test of Basic Skills:

St. John Neumann uses the Iowa Test Basic Skills test as a measure of standardized achievement. The testing is administered in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. It is designed to assess achievement in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Spelling. The success of the SJN academic program is reflected year after year, as students consistently score higher than average on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills

Standardized tests were never intended to be used as a comparison test between schools. In fact, it is an invalid statistical method to make such a comparison. Many additional factors that are involved (and vary from school-to-school) render a mathematical/ precise comparison to be flawed. It is important to note that standardized tests have 2 main functions. Standardized tests are DIAGNOSTIC reports that measure:
  • Individual student progress (Parents may measure their child in light of national norms). School curriculum/ state standards (Schools may evaluate their instructional goals and objectives by measuring trends that are followed on a year-by-year basis). 
  • The test helps to determine the students who need remedial help and those who need to be challenged. A file is made for each student who takes the test so the file can be easily read to help determine the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student.

ACRE Test:

The (ACRE) Assessment of Catechesis/Religious Education test is administered in Grades 5 and 8 to evaluate the faith knowledge and attitudes of students. The test has questions that evaluate the religious beliefs, attitudes, practices, and perceptions of the students. It measures religious beliefs as it relates to God, the Church, Liturgy and Sacraments, Revelation, Life in Christ, Church History, Prayer/Religious Practices and Catholic Faith Literacy.

Star-Online Reading:

The Star-Online Reading Test is administered to students in Grades 2-8 at least once each quarter. The test results are used to determine the students Reading goals for each quarter.
