School Board Minutes - October 4, 2004

Present: Jeff Thompson – Chair, Sherry Sloger, Dale Kobayashi, Msgr. Mank - Canonical Administrator, Jack Holmes – Principal, Brad Sparkman, Jim Grover, Liz Hellrung – Teacher Rep., Debbie Shah, Kit Morrissey, Marsha Maller, Theresa Rendleman, Dave Gebhardt, Lynn Kerkemeyer, John Ross.

Guests: Charles Hellrung, Carol Bishop, Kathy Parker.

Call to Order: Jeff Thompson called the meeting to order.

Opening Prayer: Jim Grover

New Member to School Board – Brad Sparkman is the new board member from St. Jerome’s Parish; Brad has 2 girls in SJN, grades 1 and 4; Brad lives in Troy and is a lab technician.

Approval of September minutes with change; Pastor Report – some discussion on whether or not there is a curriculum that teaches about elections by placing an emphasis on social responsibility; motion made by Theresa Rendleman; seconded by Debbie Shah; motion carries.

Correspondence – School board chair received a letter from Deacon Bill Maurer resigning from school board.

Assignment of Prayer – Lynn Kerkemeyer

Old Business

Graduate Survey – This is a survey going out to the 8th grade graduates; the goal was to see how the children transitioned into high school; general discussion of survey; we have a target date of January 2005 for survey.

2003-2004 Fiscal Year – Handout given; a financial review to take place at the end of October; the diocese will do a comprehensive financial review; we will receive written recommendations from the diocese at the end of the review; some discussion as to whether or not to have monthly meetings; discussion of earned days and storing of hours for faculty; discussion of capital campaign; we have $175,000 outstanding in capital campaign donations.

Classroom Capacity – Handout given; faculty wants to meet about this policy before we proceed; discussion of class size in area schools; discussion of a possible 3rd kindergarten; discussion of target class sizes; strength of our pre-school is critical to our kindergarten enrollment.

Policy - Police Questioning and Apprehension Policy – some question of policies’ wording.
