School Board Minutes - December 6, 2004
Present: Jeff Thompson Chair, Sherry Sloger, Dale Kobayashi, John Ross, Brad Sparkman, Kit Morrissey, Jim Grover, Debbie Shah, Elizabeth Hellrung Teacher Rep., Marsha Maller, Lynn Kerkemeyer, Jack Holmes Principal, Dave Gebhardt.
Absent: Msgr. Mank Canonical Administrator, Theresa Rendleman.
Guests: Robert Baird, Jennifer Parker, George Kersey, Bonnie Gasawski.
Call to Order: Jeff Thompson called the meeting to order.

Note: At this point there was a change in the order of the meeting.
Athletic Directors Report Basketball season has started for grades 5-8; new jerseys have been purchased for the girls basketball teams; new shorts were purchased for the 6th grade girls basketball team; December 17 & 18 are the dates for the 5th grade tournament; the First Annual Wine Tasting was held on
December 3; 71 tickets for the wine tasting were sold at $15.00 each; athletics made over $1,000; SJN made $750 off of wine sales; wine tasting event will be promoted earlier next year; our gate and concession stand is bringing in enough revenue to pay for referees and concessions; AD talked to Larry Puent about 8th grade donation of outdoor concession stand; if child is ineligible to play sports, the teacher will let the AD know; discussion about athletic policy; Randy Schmitt and Jim Carlson are now coaching the 8th grade boys basketball team.
Approval of November minutes with minor changes in text; motion made by Jim Grover; seconded by Kit Morrissey; motion carries.
Principal Report We have water coming in some of the windows; can Building and Grounds address this; there is a possible change of uniform company to a company named Rising Stars; FASDIRECT can set up a computer program for your needs at the school; May 2 the Illinois state board of education and the diocese will be at SJN for a visit; we need to get serious about some decisions concerning our Scrip program; perhaps we need to hire someone that would get tuition credit or eliminate rebate; much discussion of Scrip program; we need to be prepared to vote on Scrip rebate.
Old Business
Athletics Much discussion about policy; motion made to move policy with changes to school wide consultation; motion made by Marsha Maller; seconded by Jim Grover; motion carries.
Classroom Capacity Handout given; much discussion about policy; motion made to accept amended version of classroom capacity policy; motion made by John Ross; seconded by Jim Grover; classroom capacity policy to go to Canonical Administrator.
Police Questioning Msgr. Mank has policy to sign.
Committee Reports
Principal Handout given; Terra Nova results will be received in January February, 2005.
Teacher Teachers will attend conference and workshops gearing up for Catholic Schools Week.
Finance Handout given; recommendations from the diocese are being finalized; registration and pre-registration letters will go out the middle of January; they are due back February 15; discussion of registration letters.
Building & Grounds Discussion of hiring a contractor to handle the parking lot project.
Development Annual Fund is up to $7,256 in donations; registration banners will be placed at the 3 parishes from mid January to mid February; perhaps we could have a speaker at the 3 parishes during Catholic Schools Week.
Planning Survey committee met after PTU meeting in November; parent survey ready to be distributed at the beginning of the year.
Faith Formation Discussion of crucifix to be placed in gym.
Grant Writing Handout given; our application for grant for a weather station has been accepted; BLI Lighting Specialists visited SJN to propose submission of a grant application for lighting enhancements.
